“Ayurveda is coming to Armenia”

On 25 November, the Embassy of India had organized First India-Armenia Scientific Seminar at the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) with (read as – participation of) scientists of Indian traditional medicine representing the Ministry of AYUSH in the Government of India [Mr. R.S. Sinha from the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Homeopathy) and Dr. Padhi from Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences of India] who scientifically presented India's ancient medical system of Ayurveda.

In his opening remarks, the YSMU Rector M. Narimanyan mentioned that “it is a long-awaited event that we begin a deeper study of methods of Indian traditional medicine and Indian health practices. My teacher, Professor Amatuni, paid too much attention to the ancient Indian medicine, especially breathing techniques, and had studied them in India for a few months. Mariam Gharabaghtsyan had organized an Association of Homeopathy, which is also closely connected with India”.

The Deputy Minister of Healthcare Sergey Khachatryan mentioned that Indian traditional medicine for traces back to millennia, Armenian medicine, too, is a “popular science, and I believe that our people will be widely acquainted with this ancient system of medicine. This is not only medical but also a cultural value. We already have a close cooperation with India. With the support of the Indian Embassy and the Government of India Telemedicine system has been introduced and now the equipment installation works are on”.

Ambassador of India to Armenia Mr. Suresh Babu informed that the new Ministry had been formed by the suggestion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the Ministry’s name sounds very Armenian – AYUSH (Ministry of AYUSH – Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy): “There are Ayurvedic centers in many countries, like US, UK, Germany, Russia and etc. In Hungary, ayurveda drugs are registered by their nature and are not categorized as herbal or plant medicines under state registration procedures. This is the first attempt to introduce Ayurveda in Armenia. Let the Armenian scientists, experts, state institutions do their research to study the efficacy of these traditional systems of medicine. We on our part are ready to discuss the possibilities of joint scientific works and also to sign MoU with the Government of Armenia.”

The Indian scientists, Mr. Sinha and Dr. Padhi made presentations on the use of Ayurvedia system and its efficacy.
